2007-2008 Strategic Plan

From the President:
Dear Colleagues,

As advocates for New Mexicoˇ¦s cardiology professionals, striving to work together to improve our work environment and quality of patient care, the New Mexico Chapter of the American College of Cardiology is proud to submit this strategic plan outlining our mission, vision and goals during this first year of the newly incorporated New Mexico ACC Chapter. This plan was developed by the present members of the New Mexico Chapter Council on June 21, 2007 based on information provided from respondents to the ACC All Member Survey for New Mexico.

This plan will be discussed at the Thursday, August 23, 2007 New Mexico Chapter meeting, to be held at 6:00 pm at the Hyatt Regency Tamaya in conjunction with the Southwest Heart Symposium. Your comments and insight will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Jane E. Schauer, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.C.
President, New Mexico Chapter
American College of Cardiology

Mission
The mission of the NM-ACC Chapter is to reflect and support the mission of the American College of Cardiology in order to enhance the work environment and quality of patient care for the cardiology professionals of New Mexico. The mission statement of the ACC reads:
ˇ§ The mission of the American College of Cardiology is to advocate for quality cardiovascular care ˇX through education, research promotion, development and application of standards and guidelines ˇX and to influence health care policy.ˇ¨

Vision
Our vision for the NM-ACC Chapter is to create a sense of community for the New Mexico cardiology community which includes cardiologists, cardiac care team members and cardiac fellows-in-training, through which legislative and regulatory advocacy advances as well as quality improvement initiatives can be conducted. The ultimate goal of all the efforts of the NM-ACC Chapter is prevention of cardiovascular disease and continuous improvement of cardiovascular patient care.

Goals

The first year goals of the NM-ACC Chapter are to create awareness of the chapter, support for the chapter goals, promotion of the chapter within the healthcare community, and a base of committed volunteers in order to pursue advocacy, education and quality initiatives, such as the D2B project, Cardiologist for a Day program, and others.

We aim to accomplish these through communication and networking, and have identified the following tasks:

Create a chapter website that would feature the following:
o Introduction of NM-ACC Council Members
o NM-ACC Chapter Membership Directory
o Presentation of FIT Members (A. Achrekar)
o Presentation of new cardiologists in the NM area

Contact other healthcare professionals or professional organizations for collaborative interaction:
o Extend invitations to Practice Administrators to attend Chapter Meetings (M. Escarzaga)
o Develop Chapter alliance with NM State Medical Society (K. Blake)
o Identify and invite representatives from all major cardiovascular institutions to participate at the Chapter leadership level (H. White)

Create a volunteer base to promote advocacy and quality projects:
o Create a NM Chapter Quality Committee and an Advocacy Committee to facilitate projects in these key areas
o Contact NM Cardiologists who have expressed an interest in working with the Chapter from the all member survey (M. Escarzaga)
o Contact NM Cardiologists who have personal relationships with state legislators to discuss possible grassroots legislative efforts (K. Blake)
o Identify FIT and/or Early Career member for scholarship application through ACC National to 2007 Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. (H.White)
o Invite FIT members to participate in projects they have identified as important; ask their input in addressing NM Cardiology Workforce issues (G. Charlton/A. Achrekar)
o Invite CCA (Cardiac Care Team Members: RN, NP, PA, PharmD) members to participate in projects they have identified as important; determine NM Chapter CCA dues amount for 2008 (L. Martinez)
